2009: The Beginning - A look back at Alabama's first championship season under Nick Saban

Опубликовано: 14 ноя 2019
You remember the T-shirt: “Tebow cried. Cam Lied. LSU tried.”
There were different variations of the T-shirt after Alabama’s national championship run in 2009, which would be the first of five national championships under coach Nick Saban.
“This is not the end,” the Alabama coach said. “This is the beginning.”
But, before you can truly appreciate that national championship win, you have to understand the mindset, the personnel changes, the opponents and the obstacles standing in the Crimson Tide’s way.
The year before, the Tide was a victim of Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators. Tim Tebow ripped open the heart of the Crimson Tide as the Gators secured a second straight national title.
A stunning loss to Utah in the Sugar Bowl gave the Tide back-to-back losses in a season which started with a win over a ninth-ranked Clemson team “that announced Alabama on the national stage.”
Gone from the 2008 team were leaders Antoine Caldwell, Andre Smith, John Parker Wilson, Glen Coffee and Rashad Johnson. Those players replaced with names like Greg McElroy, Barrett Jones, Mark Ingram, Mike Johnson, Julio Jones, and Trent Richardson.
AL.com, on the 10th anniversary of the 2009 national title run, takes a three-part visual trip through what became the foundation for a modern-day college-football dynasty.

  • I wish Paul wouldn’t have been In this because of how much he hates Alabama. He shouldn’t have the privilege to talk about us

  • Long live the king 'Saban'. I really liked McElroy. He really did good that season. And to have McCarron coming up next, we were blessed. Lane Kiffin always gives us our hardest games. He's a good coach. Mark Ingram and Richardson was on another level. Another half a second Tennessee would of got another shot at that field goal cause of Cody taking his helmet off too soon. Auburn is king of the trick plays. I'm glad we had Kiffin at that Auburn game calling that pass call to win it for us was awesome.

  • Been a bama fan since I was a kid around 1977 , I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada , this team has always giving me lots to look forward to can't wait for the 21 season

  • I have that T-shirt and I almost got into a fist fight with a damn Battle chicken's fan in Jim N Nicks BBQ because she took offense. I had to tell her, better to be quietly offended than visit the local ER..

  • Did the same thing to trey sermon

  • The Auburn 2010 documentary is just as good, i respect bama more than fugezee Georgia clutching their herchel walker vs tape...

  • They hyped McElroy way too much in this video. He literally was just another Bama QB. Was carried by that offense.

    • College version of trent dilfer

  • Still unbelievable! RTR!!

  • Money talks......

  • Now we can add another one to that - 2020, under difficult circumstances with covid, but an all SEC Schedule, 13-0 is sweet! Roll Tide Roll!!! 🐘🏈🏆

  • I was at the Tennessee game with my sister. When the Vols were ready to kick I was in tears with my eyes closed sitting and praying while everyone around me was on their feet. The next thing I know my sister grabbed my shirt and was yellin "Cody blocked it!! Cody blocked it!!" The crowd around me erupted screaming and yelling. I started crying tears of joy while weak in my knees. It is a moment in my life that I will never forget.

  • I like the idea to trade Kirk too

  • Boise State would have shut weak Alabama out, the Tide has to Hide... That's why they beat West Carolina and claim to be a champ.

  • Tennessee had coaching problems , go figure. All Tennessee games are just a footnote. Well said Paul.

  • The clammy title findingsinitially scream because burma erroneously lie concerning a vagabond odometer. cooing, testy turkish

  • The strong tongue prudently answer because menu identically dam over a unkempt bathtub. adorable, eminent broccoli

  • The Florida game in 2009 and the Sugar Bowl vs Miami following the 1992 season are the two best games I've seen Alabama play in my lifetime. Too, the 1992 and 2009 teams had a lot in common.

  • I believe if Colt McCoy wouldn’t have gone down on the first drive, Texas would have won in ‘09. Got within 3 with a true freshman quarterback before the strip sack, etc. Colt drove right down the field on that first drive then got hurt. If only.

  • Give us a damn offense and we beat the 2009 Alabama team. Our offense ground our defense into the ground that game. By the fourth quarter our defense was spent. Can't win if the defense is gassed by the 4th. Credit goes to feeding Ingram that game. You go with what works. Go Gamecocks!

  • BUILT BY COCHRAN!!

  • Little did these guys know they would be the foundation to build a dynasty

  • Oddly enough every Bama player drives a new car but no one from the NCAA has thought, "hey, maybe we should look into this?"

    • @Joshua Ciardelli who starts a reply with shut up? Don't have a sister to make out with?

    • shut up lol. if there were a reason to look into things like that at bama it would have been done.

  • Chiczik was actually a good coach for auburn, great recruiter who didn't get nearly enough credit

  • 13:00 How many SEC head coaches were at that game? At least Saban, McElwain, Kirby, Kiffin, and Orgeron.

  • 2009? They had something like 13 in 1992.

  • Here we are 1/15/21 and Alabama is coming off its 6th National Championship in 12 years.

  • Roll Tide 2020 National Champs!

  • Did that dude say he’s a ginger lol

  • Where’s julios credit my man caught 4 passes in a row on a clutch drive cmon now

  • Loved Clinton Haha -Dix

  • If Colt didn't get hurt, I think college football would look much different today.

  • Prophetic words From Nick Saban.

  • I remember the 2009 season like it was yesterday !!! This has been a great ride so far with coach Nick Saban and The Alabama Crimson Tide !!! 🐘 Roll Tide Roll 🐘 18 X National Champions 🏆 !!!

    • Same I remember the 2010 season aswell because of ncaa 11 I always used bama in the dynasty game mode

  • Urban Meyer was no longer the King...Nick Saban was!!!

  • When Upchurch caught that pass...a little tear came out.

  • Here after Bama just won number 18. Hopefully many more to come. Roll Saban, and RMFT!!!

  • Congratulations to Alabama they won another national championship again

  • Who's back and watching this after the Alabama vs. Ohio State game? True legend

  • Who’s here after they won the chip again last night? LETS GO BABY

  • Make that anothet National Championship... ROLL MF TIDE!

  • 11 years and 6 National Championships later...... HE SHO’LL WAS LYING ! That was THE BEGINNING ! ROLL TIDE ! 🏆

  • I’m a Tennessee fan can’t believe I watched this whole thing lol it was enjoyable though as I love football regardless but I hate the way finebaum roasted them lol

    • Looking forward to some good Bama - Ten matchups in the future ;)

  • As a Gainesville Florida native i was not happy this year at all

  • I was born and bred an Ohio State Buckeye, and I’ll always be proud of my team, no matter what. You can’t however, deny the fact that Bama has long been the golden standard in all of college football. There’s a reason they’re always favored in just about every game they play. Nonetheless, I love my Buckeyes, and always will. Just wanted to give Bama some respect.

    • @D Huck appreciate that man. It’s better than being a Michigan fan, that’s for sure haha but for real though, congratulations on y’all’s championship season man!

    • Thanks and we Bama fans give y'all Ohio State mad respect because y'all are a class act, and have seperated yourselfs in an elite class of college football teams

  • I’m tired of Alabama winning

  • 2:27

  • McElroy talkin bout himself as if he wasn’t a top tier collegiate athlete. Cool guy

    • McElroy's problem was his timing. He got to the SEC at the most pivotal moment the conference experienced since Integration. Historically, he would've fit in with the rest of the greatest QBs in SEC history, but he finished his career when the Spread Revolution guys like Tim Tebow and Cam Newton were ushering in was changing the conference forever. Being sufficient was no longer acceptable. You had to be a dazzling playmaker yourself now. AJ McCarron was easily better than Greg, John Parker Wilson, Brodie Croyle, and Tyler Watts. Easily. You'd think being the starting QB at Alabama at that time at the height of the Dynasty would open it's own doors, but it didn't. He couldn't do what Johnny Manziel, RG3, and Jameis Winston were doing, so he got overlooked. It was all about versatility now. There's a reason Blake Sims (of all people) replaced AJ at QB the very next year.

    • @Sean Kelly I'd say he was above average. Either way, he has a National Championship ring. And his time with the Tide led to a career in broadcasting. McElroy was also a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.

    • @TideFan Yankee that's a nice way too say he's avg which he was

    • Very underrated QB. He had a good arm and was accurate, but his best attributes were his decision making and his leadership. He followed the cardinal rule for QB's "don't beat yourself".

  • As a ginger. I cosign on that statement. It's hard out here lol. People talk about social injustice...but we don't have groups advocating for us because every one of us knows none of you care. :D

  • I cannot believe the ginger comment made the final cut for this. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 wtf hahaha

  • In 2021 watching them kiss and pass the ball around roll tide

  • Then cam newton happened 😂😂😂

    • Then Cam Newton left, and Auburn has fired two head coaches and only appeared in one championship game that they lost since then 😂😂😂

  • Glenn coffee. Damn haven't heard that name in so long

    • @Eric S I believe he went special forces after that. Want to know what a man is? THIS IS A MAN!

  • It’s crazy that you really can’t make these type of vids for bama because as I watch this in ‘21 bama just beat notre dame to advance to another chip

  • The blue-eyed chief disappointedly pop because saw structurally beg abaft a volatile sheet. bitter, smelly river

  • Greg McElroy AJ McCarron Blake Sims Jalen Hurts Tua Tagovailoa Mac Jones

    • This is interesting. A powerhouse program but has not had any elite NFL qbs. I think that shows that bama is so strong in recruiting and scheme that they are still elite without that most important position. Maybe they are on to something.

    • Joe Namath

    • You named QBs but imma name some Wrs then 1. Julio Jones 2. Amari Cooper 3. Calvin Ridley 4. Jayden Waddle 5. Devonta Smith

  • Liverpool

    • Liverpool is Wisconsin Badgers Football lol

  • You forget colt was injured on the opening drive, shoving the ball down their throats.

    • Nah, they mentioned it. Too bad Colt couldn’t handle being tackled.

  • Lol, to say you didn’t care about the sugar bowl after losing it sounds pretty pathetic.

    • @killemall Smitty I’d believe you if they were winning championships like they are now, but at that point, that program and those players care about being in the sugar bowl because they’re just getting big at that point. To think otherwise is laughable lol.

    • They didn't andwhen you work for championships, anything less is not worthy.

    • It’s not the big dance so who cares bout a lesser bowl game

  • I know bama fans are tired of hearing this... but you guys know as well as I do. Had Colt not got hurt, Texas would of stomped this Alabama team.

    • @killemall Smitty truth hurts

    • Jesus Christ you texas fans are too much, what if what if blahblahblah. If y'all were so good as to stomp Bama you should've beat them without McCoy. BTW where is McCoy playing now?

  • Roll Tribe. Beat Bama, and we did. 09' was a great year for FSU.

  • The ready gym independently camp because vein ethically park concerning a overjoyed south korea. witty, mysterious pruner

  • 5:23 what

  • Gene Chizik shows class.

  • This was an incredible film, and I cannot believe the NFL legends that just played not knowing the future

  • In other words this was one of the luckiest national championship runs ever.... kinda sad as loaded as that offense was. Who th gets 225 yards rushing in a game and only puts up two scores in a game? These dudes were either very, very lucky or just destined for whatever weird reason.

  • Don’t let us forget the good old Greg was seeing ghost before Sam Darnold.

  • When Colt got “hurt”, you knew that he could feel that he was going to pounded the rest of the game. What a pansy

  • Paul Finebaum is such an ass bro

  • Roll tide

  • Still can’t believe Colt McCoy got hurt on that first drive !’

    • It had to be on his throwing shoulder 2 if it would've been on his left shoulder he could've played threw it but he wouldn't have been able to run

    • This was the fall of Texas football.

  • Why is this Finebaum dude in this video? Always acting like an expert on the team.

    • @joscaca the video literally said he was a former Birmingham sports personality. He covered the team for a while

    • @Joshua Ciardelli Bc he has a Radio talk show? And is old as dirt? Maybe an Alabama football program historian. Not an expert in my book.

    • He is an expert on Bama football lol.

  • 12:51 "Go Tigers"

  • Greg McElroy is a ginger?? That’s what I got from the few minutes of this video lol.

  • This is the documentary of the beginning. As a Georgia fan, I look forward to the end

    • Keep looking 😁 🐘 RTR

    • Lol!! Luckily I am a Bama fan but if I wasn’t I would fee the exact same way

  • Marquise Maze played at my highschool. Now he's the running backs coach there

  • Coach O was a Tennessee assistant in '09?? I had no idea!!

    • Yep, and when Kiffin left the Vols (in the middle of the night) he and Ed O left together, with a LOT of the Vols top recruits from what I understand. The Vols haven't recovered since then. Just goes to show you the good and bad ONE head coach can do, especially when you compare Coach Saban with Lane Kiffin. Kiffin leaving the WAY he did devastated the Vols and it's still being felt. It also illustrates just how great Coach Nick Saban actually is.

    • 12:52

    • I seen that too! I had to pause it and go back and take a second look

  • Florida is waking up it's time to give the seat back 2021

    • Yes sir. 🏈GATOR 🌏 NATION 🐊

  • I was a little too young to really appreciate the ‘92 season, so this was in a way my first Bama Championship. Still the sweetest for me.

    • The 92 season had a defense that was unreal. They were great. The 09 offense was better.

    • Me too. I was 11 and remembered the 92 national championship; my parents went to that game, but I wasn't much into Bama football at that point.

    • Lot of similarities between the 92 and 09 teams.

  • Saban: hey Bob, thanks for telling me how to beat Texas. Stoops: Good Lord what have I done?!?!?!?

    • @David But he did, so they lost. End of story lol.

    • If Colt McCoy doesn't get injured Texas wins...just saying.

  • ROOOOOOOOOLL TIDE

  • Love The Crimson Tide. Best Team Ever.
