The Cognitive Tradeoff Hypothesis

Опубликовано: 5 дек 2018

  • Ohhhh... I think I sort of realize what this is about. Speed reading and Olympian god-status mental mathematicians use this! They shut down that mental "voice" produced in the speech center, and suddenly they can read paragraphs in seconds and solve the square root of 14 digit numbers with decimals in them faster than you can type them on a calculator. If you scan the brain during, you'll see the speech center lighting up like fireworks, and simultaneously if that voice turns on those same activities are redistributed and become much more sluggish. This is just screaming vestigial function of what became the speech center, and what our brain did with the chores that used to be done there makes perfect sense. Any real neuroscientists, feel totally free to tear me apart. I'm shooting in the dark here for sure.

    • Sorry, double post. Wanted to clarify what I'm talking about is what I think is a sort of mental "switch" we may have access to that allows us to sometimes use our brains in the same way we might have before developing speech. The only time I ever see humans perform anywhere near the way those chimps did. A voluntary cognitive tradeoff?

  • Vsauce sold out to RU-tv

  • Come back to regular RU-tv fam!

  • If we read Quran, he would reach this conclusion much longer that what makes us human is selflessness, caring and finding purpose of life that is to worship one GOD

  • Now, this is based on the assumption that we came from apes through biological evolution. What if we didn't?

  • I don’t know why the west always trying to force “Darwin Theory” into our minds and wants us to believe in it, When they know it’s just a Bullshits.

  • @ 4:46 the monkey on the left...

  • Michael: Ai, you having fun? Ai: *punches wall*

  • nobody: Michael: * *challenges a monkey* *

  • I used to live for more than 3 years in Nagoya which is in the same region (Chubu) as Inuyama. It's a beautiful city, Inuyama Castle has the oldest castle tower in the whole of Japan dating back to the 1440s, there is a beautiful architectural-park called "Little World Museum of Man", which features buildings from 22 countries, "Meiji Mura", an open-air architectural museum which preserves historic buildings from the Meiji (1867-1912), Taisho (1912-1926), & Shōwa (1926-1989) periods and of course the Monkey Park which is near to the Primate Research Institute. There are also amazing delicacies such as: Goheimochi (rice cakes with a delicious sauce) and Dengaku, (a variety of foods that are basted and grilled alternately until caramelised).

  • that could be a helluva good game. it would beat the shit out of the angry birds

  • Well, in all honesty, those monkeys do this test for their whole lives. I think if Michael would go and live with them for a month, his results would be much better.

  • I stopped watching your videos, I no longer watch your videos cause it cost money, I rather watch your videos for free. I dislike RU-tv Red/Premium.

  • ""And God said to the seventy angels who stood foremost before him, to those who were near to him, saying, Come let us descend and confuse their tongues, that one man shall not understand the language of his neighbor, and they did so unto them." Book of Jasher 9:32 "And the throne upon which the king sat was covered with gold and silver, and with onyx stones, and it had seventy steps." Book of Jasher 47:43 Book of Jasher 47: ''45 If he was one of the common people, he ascended to the third step, and the king would descend to the fourth and speak to him, and their custom was, moreover, that any man who understood to speak in all the seventy languages, he ascended the seventy steps, and went up and spoke till he reached the king. 46 And any man who could not complete the seventy, he ascended as many steps as the languages which he knew to speak in. 47 And it was customary in those days in Egypt that no one should reign over them, but who understood to speak in the seventy languages. " =70 languages given by 70 angels sent by God=

  • Where are my fingers?

  • Sub to me plzwe need the money

  • 22:10

  • Would be great to get someone like Derren Brown in on these episodes.

  • Bullshit!!

    • Where is your factual data to prove otherwise? This is the most logical theory so far, which took countless hours of research? And please don't be ignorant and use the Bible as the explanation! Bible is the real bullshit, I have so much data to prove it. It literally says the Earth is 6000 years old, when there are millions of objects found on Earth that go way beyond this time range.

  • So the theory is language developed bc of a Savannah 😂😂😂😂 what r u talking about

    • Cnt lie tht sounds rite but the bible says the word was from the beginning

    • Yes because we were forced into the savannah without the capabilities to fight/run from big animals like cheetahs, lions etc so we evolved language as a strategy to survive.

  • The Christchurch Shootings Should Implicate All White Australians www.ta3rbanat.tk/2019/03/the-christchurch-shootings-should.html

  • Why are awesome things not free?

  • We should do an experiment where we put chimpanzees in caves for generations and see if they change

  • Chimpanzee Rule The Wave!!

  • Numbers doesn’t actually mean anything to chimps maybe use a different symbols. Like something gradually increasing

    • Remember that these chimps have trained on a number of games. I have chimps (not sure if it was this group) communicate using various screen input methods (phonetics, sign language, etc). It would not surprise me if they have been taught those meanings.

  • Bring back the hey vsauce Michael here

  • {\_/} (^_^) />🧪 Want the original VSauce back? Take it! It’s free! Nope I lied you’ll never get it back... HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA

  • Tarefa de sociologia

  • It could be because we have so much stimuli, thoughts etc... at any given moment that our short term memory suffers. Also this is not to say that having a slow short term memory is a bad thing. Maybe humans have to take things slow to store it more long term... I would be curious to see the chimps long term memory tests.

  • How can we weaponize this?

  • I have a question for you, *how does ant man breathe when he goes smaller then an air molecule?* HmMmMmMmMmM???

  • Chimps can focus on the entire screen simultaneously to memorize the state of the image and patterns. While chimp is storing what looks like 6. While Humans are focusing on numbers, then memorise each number individually. Because we recognize numbers so we are storing number not a pattern. We are storing 6 (six). It might take some practice but humans can match or get close to chimps score.

  • Hllo ji kaise hai sabb

  • *17:15* and...... *fail*

  • 'course they can do that, they trained their whole lives. sure we could to if you did that to someone.

  • Vsauce salty

  • buen video

  • 1:04 1 3 2 9 8 6 4 7 5

  • Our ancestors were also human, not a mix of animal and human. Damn michael get your facts first

    • +zz we may have similarities but we were never the same species if you think shaving your body hair is an evolution then I dont know what to tell you

    • Actually no, your wrong, it all leads back to the first cells 4.1 billion years ago. We were once part of the same group of species, but we evolved in different ways, hence creating 2 new species from 1 species but they both survived.

  • omg where chulkers

  • the intro punched my chest

  • i miss the old intro... hey michel here

  • Why does it say premium cyz im able to watch ot wut

  • If people including my Master would treat each other the way most dogs do the earth would be so much nicer.

  • play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gboson.Ayumi

  • I don’t think this is necessarily true because the chimpanzees were trained to see the numbers and find them for several years before vsauce ever filmed it. A human can also be trained to complete this type of task and it would take even less time to train a human to do it.

  • The only way to communicate, free episodes

  • 5:04 Michael thinking: where’s brudda! Can’t find brudda!

  • *"I AM HOWTOBASIC!!!!!!!"*

  • i miss the regular videos so much. plz michael start up again. we need you so much

  • Think Chimp = GPU, Humans = CPU If you understand computer processing!!

    • +Your Average Newbie Ooooooo learn something new, go figure. Thanks! 😁

    • They should try that test on a Crow

    • +jsrocker248 CPU is a very good at all-purpose processing. GPU on the other hand, is Amazing at processing images (or graphics) and can render images & graphics soo much faster than CPU can. This shows that CPU is a very good at pretty much anything, but GPU is much better than CPU, but in one category. This comment is basically saying that: Humans are not as good as chimps in this sector, but better at almost everything else.

    • I don't need to understand computer science to indicate that given with this video and how chimps are far superior in one aspect that we fail miserably, is to then be interpreted by the understanding of your joke in which a GPU is a lot faster than a CPU by using my intellect of a human brain. In other words.... 😂

    • I'm glad I understand this shit xD

  • Michael performed too well. The Scientist was worried that he was disproving his theory. You can tell by his body-language.

  • Dude - I could totally do that. You don't memorize "where" the numbers are. You memorize the shape they make. It's how I remember phone numbers. I'm not bragging - I'm just saying. It's the shape, not the 'where'. If that makes sense.

    • that's basically what happens to someone just starting the test too. we're familiar with numbers, so we take immediate glances and remember 1, 2, and 3, but it takes active mental effort for us to remember 4 and above, because we just don't have 'chunks' of information the brain makes and uses to speed up the process

  • Half of the comments below are people crying about how they miss free videos.

  • I've said it for years that Animals are extremely intelligent, they think differently but are very aware of their surroundings than most humans. I know this because I'm an Adorable Dog and I know how to manipulate my Master., because I'm the Boss.

    • +莫肯尼 woooff.....wooff woof...wuf?

    • Aren't I Adorable woof

  • I'm honestly mad that he doesn't say "Heyy Vsauce, Michael here" in ever episode

  • あの博士英語喋れてカッケェ!!

  • one word Thx 5 Stars *****

  • Rise of the planet of the Chimps !!!!!

  • So the chimps are so familiar with tests on screens we don't even discuss it....ok

  • When they showed the 3 numbers I was like "Oh wow can Chimps not do that?" Even felt a bit of pride like "Hah that was so easy, I guess that's the gap between humans and chimps!" Nearly got whiplash when Ayumu started bangin' out 9 like it was nothing. Very humbling.

  • Okay RU-tv Premium, shut up and take my money.

  • Wait when they showed the monkey doing it he had more time...I remember half the numbers that time, I’m kinda an overachiever.

  • Give me a novice chimp and pit him against the novice human. Track their progress and time to get a comprehensive view of a Chimps/Human's clarity of short-term memory. I understand that young chimps, especially young males, would need to quickly identify threats and that same visual targeting is applied to the numbers test. I would love to better understand how this ability is developed and honed over time. Are chimp infants also better innately at this task? It's very interesting.

  • we came from god

  • Pls do regualr videos again

  • What is the name of this game that they're playing? I'd like to find a site that has this so I can see how bad I do playing it..... anyone know?

  • The human species were created by god, first one was Adam and then his wife and then we all came, monkeys however have nothing to do with us they are just different species, this episode is a waste of time.

  • Language change our brains fundamentally. Our brains want to get out of our bodies.

  • This suck for gamers

  • news alert: Ai is an A.I.

  • Now I understand why I suck in a conversation, 'cause I'm brainy..🤪🤪

  • Wow now I'm in love with chimps

  • HE PUTS IN SO MUCH DRAMA WHILE EXPLAINING, HE COULD BE AN ACTOR...LOLOL

  • This series is the only thing that makes me interested in RU-tv Originals. So so good :)

  • _I dream of the day that Michael will remember his password and upload a normal video..._

  • I am staring at my phone.
